Erica K. Williams is a partner in the firm’s Tampa office. She is a trial lawyer who focuses her practice on insurance, premises liability and property and casualty. Erica is a skilled litigator who has used her years of experience and talents to unravel the most complex claims.

Prior to joining Hamilton Miller & Birthisel, Erica was staff counsel for one of the nation’s leading insurer of churches, churchgoers, and faith-based institutions. She has also worked in private practice at large insurance defense firms and served as a federal judicial law clerk for the Honorable Mary S. Scriven, current United States District Judge for the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida.

Erica received her B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, and her J.D. from the University of Florida Levin College of Law. While in law school, Erica served as a teaching fellow for the College of Law’s Legal Research and Writing Department, was an advocate on the National Environmental Moot Court team, was inducted into Phi Delta Phi International Legal Fraternity, and was awarded the College of Law’s Pro Bono Certificate for her volunteer work with Hillsborough County’s juvenile drug court. Erica was also a judicial intern for Justice Peggy A. Quince of the Florida Supreme Court. Prior to attending law school, Erica worked as a Regulatory Engineer for the largest water management district in the State of Florida.

Erica is admitted to practice before all state courts in Florida, the United States District Courts for the Northern, Southern and Middle Districts of Florida and the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. She was selected as a Rising Star by Florida Super Lawyers Magazine from 2012-14 and a 2020 Top Corporate Counsel by Tampa Bay Business Journal.

Erica is a past executive board member of both the George Edgecomb Bar Association and the Virgil Hawkins Florida Chapter of the National Bar Association. She is a member of the Hillsborough County Bar Association, the Florida A&M University National Alumni Association and the University of Florida Law Alumni Council.

EXPERIENCE

  • Defense verdict where plaintiff sustained life threatening injuries after falling off an unusually and admittedly high sidewalk curb. 
  • Summary judgment granted in subrogation case where carriers disputed whether a party who was injured during an event, but acting outside the event’s parameters, was an “insured” under the event host’s commercial general liability policy.
  • Summary judgment granted in a breach of contract dispute concerning whether an insurance policy’s windstorm and hail exclusion applied to exclude coverage for property damages caused by an unnamed hurricane.
